The efforts of the US-based non-profit Global Fund to End Modern Slavery got a boost in its fight to combat modern day slavery with the funding from the United States Department of State.

The U.S. Department of State announced a groundbreaking $25 million award to the Global Fund to End Modern Slavery for transformational programs around the world to reduce the prevalence of modern slavery – also known as human trafficking. The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery is a nonprofit § 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to create a public-private partnership to dramatically expand resources and develop focused, coherent strategies across countries and industries to reduce the prevalence of modern slavery.

Since 2014, MOSIMTEC has been supporting The Global Fund in a variety of ways to understand the ‘system of slavery’ around the world. These efforts have involved using modern and sophisticated techniques in data analysis, systems mapping, and predictive modeling.

A Systems Approach

Using a systems approach means defining both the means of problem-solving and the output upfront. The problem solving approach is characterized by a deliberate, iterative refinement of the questions and the hypothesis. This approach considers the combination of factors impacting the current system and the potential adaptation of the system if we intervene. Understanding this complex social system should help decrease slavery vulnerability and provide options in creating a substitute system that provides economic freedom.

Example of Causal Loop of a Social System : Overseas Foreign Workers in South-East Asia

A benefit of taking a systems approach is to account for a large number of factors (independent variables) in action with a large social system like human trafficking. With so many factors like daily wage levels, law enforcement effectiveness, social support structure, and economic incentives etc, it is difficult to identify which of these has the biggest impact, positively or negatively, on the outcome: reducing the number of people under slavery.

Such a complicated system typically is made up of a number of feedback loops, some that reinforce the current behavior while others that counter act. The decision on how and when to intervene in a social system, to get the best desired outcome, requires understanding the many sub-systems and their behavior within the bigger system.

MOSIMTEC leveraged advanced analytical techniques to map, simulate, and visualize such a typical slavery system in South-East Asia. This allowed us to communicate counter-intuitive understanding through playing with different levers and identifying most effective intervention options to combat human trafficking. The visualization of our interventions in such a dynamic system enabled us to communicate this ‘fresh perspective’ with the broader community.

About Global Fund to End Modern Slavery

The Global Fund to End Modern Slavery (GFEMS) is a bold public-private partnership developing a $1.5+ billion fund and coordinating a coherent, global strategy to address modern slavery. GFEMS collaborates across sectors and geographies with a focus on three core programmatic pillars: rule of law, business engagement, and sustaining freedom. GFEMS also prioritizes using innovative technologies for collecting data and evaluating impact.

About MOSIMTEC

The MOSIMTEC concept is different from traditional engineering and consulting services. It is based on the paradigm that technology will be instrumental in decision making. Sophisticated computer simulation software in combination with ever increasing processing speed and memory will enable decision support tools to deliver deep insight in a complex, dynamic, and real-time world. The MOSIMTEC team has extensive experience working with leading computer simulation software and solving complex issues for clients across various industries. We are uniquely positioned to support clients in making smart decisions by applying Modeling & Simulation Engineering (MSE) to predict outcomes, prescribe actions and improve operations.
