COVID-19 has crushed airports. Flights are down 80%. Passengers are down 95%. Empty planes line runways. Stores and restaurants are empty.
The good old days are gone. Long security lines, crowded concourses, and bustling drop-off/pickup areas are a thing of the past, at least for now. New needs have emerged – fever detection, infection control, social distancing, and cost control due to revenue declines.
Airports need to explore future options – ways to create safe space and people flow; scanners for fever monitoring and plans for the sick; complete automation and touchless technology in ticket lobbies, gates, and baggage claim; new methods for sanitizing taxis, trains and rideshares as they come and go; and restrooms with motion sensors and door-less entries. TSA also needs to change, maybe using facial recognition and advanced body scanners to allow passengers to walk through without stopping.
There are lots of alternatives, but no right answer, especially as traffic resumes in stages. Which ways are best in the short, medium and long-term? How can you tell? How do you avoid pitfalls? This is 2020 after all, so technology via airport simulation and modeling can light the way to help you make the right decisions and avoid the wrong ones. MOSIMTEC is here to help.
