The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains a Conditional Sailing Order to keep cruise ships from sailing in the U.S. to prevent COVID. The Cruise Lines Int’l Association estimates a loss of $39B and 301,000 American jobs.

Americans represent almost 50% of cruisers annually, but cruise lines are moving ships after >1 year without sailing in U.S. waters. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. added sailings from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. Royal Caribbean Group announced sailings in Bermuda and the Bahamas. Virgin Voyages shifted their first ship from Miami to the UK. The CDC indicates midsummer cruising is possible if cruise lines adhere to their order and requirements, but there is no timeline to resume service, even with some lines offering fully vaccinated sailings.

MOSIMTEC logistics simulation modeling can help cruise lines leverage science as a path to success. Explore network changes, the impact of new ports, medical/hygiene protocols, different levels of social distancing and fewer passengers. Use pedestrian modeling to map potential foot traffic and flow, identify busy pathways, and test directional traffic rules. And do it all virtually before making real world changes.
