The U.S. faced shortages of supplies needed to address COVID-19. The Defense Production Act (DPA) enabled the President to compel domestic companies to manufacture these supplies.
On February 5, the Biden administration announced 3 DPA actions. First, they issued orders to address component shortages for Pfizer’s vaccine manufacturing process – filling pumps and tangential flow filtration skid units. Second, they contracted with 7 suppliers to build new factories/supply lines to increase COVID testing capacity. Third, they announced plans to construct new plants to produce surgical gloves. They also have plans for masks, other PPE and syringes to extract more vaccine from vials.
Manufacturers under the DPA often produce items that are new to them e.g. Ford/GM produced ventilators. MOSIMTEC manufacturing optimization consulting can help. Manufacturing processes are complex with lots of options such as technologies, steps, sequences, staffing and production line layouts to consider. Leverage a virtual pilot project to explore these options, prevent mis-steps, and see what works best before going live. Develop a unique plan to optimize productivity, cost and other goals. MOSIMTEC industrial engineers and data scientists are here to help.
