Harley-Davidson’s North American retail sales volume dropped 28% in 2Q22 to just under 35,000 motorcycles. Their U.S. market share dropped to 41% for the first half of 2022 versus 45% at the end of 2021.
A May stoppage in production from a supply-chain problem cut the supply of motorcycles. Harley attributed the production shutdown, which lasted more than two weeks, to a regulatory compliance matter at a supplier used by one of Harley’s primary suppliers. Harley has also wrestled with other challenges, as they try to cut costs and increase profits by focusing on leaner operations, scaling back overseas expansions, eliminating some models of bikes and lowering inventories.
