While job openings are at record levels, many employers say they will need fewer employees in the future. COVID pushed companies to invest in automation and implement other changes to curb hiring.
Raytheon laid off 4,500 contractors in 2020 and sped up plans to automate factories and implement digital technologies; most contract workers won’t be called back. Raytheon also has >500 equipment improvement projects to deploy within 3-5 years, such as connecting 20,000 pieces of equipment to its networks to collect data automatically not manually, also automating assembly/production of complex parts. Hilton is moving away from daily room cleaning to cleaning by request or before check-in, cutting housekeeping jobs. Dave & Buster’s Inc./Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill + Bar now use digital tablets for food ordering/payment, cutting waiter needs.
