MIT Technology Review has an annual list of promising technologies that could have a major impact on the world. Here are their 10 technologies for 2024:
AI for Everything. We are in the age of AI. Millions have used generative tools like ChatGPT to produce text, images, videos and more from prompts. Their popularity has shaped the technology industry, made AI a household name, and compelled top companies to invest heavily.
Super-Efficient Solar Cells. Solar power is being deployed widely and is key to reducing emissions. Most sunlight isn’t converted now into electricity, but adding a layer of crystals could make panels more efficient.
Apple Vision Pro (VP). Apple will start shipping its VP mixed-reality headset this year with the highest resolution display ever for such a device. It’s early, but it could become a killer app.
Weight-Loss Drugs. Obesity is a global epidemic. Drugs like Mounjaro/Wegovy are now among the most powerful tools to treat it. They also may be able to protect against heart attacks and strokes.
Enhanced Geothermal Systems. Geothermal energy is clean, available and almost limitless, but engineering challenges have slowed growth. New drilling techniques could open the door to use more of the Earth’s heat for clean energy.
Chiplets. It’s getting harder to leverage Moore’s Law, making transistors smaller/faster every year. Engineers need new ways to make progress and chiplets, specialized chips that can be linked together, might be the answer to make computers much more powerful.
The First Gene-Editing Treatment. Treatments based on CRISPR have been emerging for years. Vertex just got regulatory approval in the US/UK to treat sickle-cell disease. There’s more to come.
Exascale Computers. New supercomputers can crunch data at unheard of speeds. This will enable scientists to perform advanced simulations of the climate, nuclear fission and more.
Heat Pumps (HP). HP can cool/heat buildings, and wider adoption can reduce emissions. Sales are growing and adoption has outpaced gas furnaces in the U.S. New types can reduce carbon even more.
Twitter Killers. Since Elon Musk bought Twitter and turned it into X, nothing has been the same. He reduced staff and cut content moderation, with significant impact on users and advertisers. Alternatives like Bluesky, Threads and others are gaining ground and the central town square is giving way to private rooms.
