AMERICAN EAGLE OUTFITTERS INC. (AEO) acquired Quiet Logistics for $350 MM in November. This was their second logistics-related purchase in 2021 as retailers struggle to get goods to stores.
Quiet Logistics has 8 fulfillment centers in 6 cities where workers aided by robots fulfill digital shipping orders. AEO also purchased e-commerce delivery startup AirTerra in May. These purchases give AEO greater scale, flexibility and efficiencies currently available to major retailers such as Amazon and Walmart by aggregating smaller shippers. It also enables an expansion into the fast growing e-commerce fulfillment business. AEO’s digital sales rose to 35% of revenue in 2Q21 from 25% pre-COVID. This allows them to hold less stock, but also requires greater control over shipping costs.
