Per The Wall Street Journal, COVID is transforming oil drilling from on-site specialists, who steer drill bits and interpret well data, to remote engineers often working at home. Oil field providers, like Schlumberger, Halliburton, and Baker Hughes, are moving to digital drilling and inspections to cut cost, keep workers safe, make faster decisions and spread lessons learned, while cutting jobs, facilities, offices due to lower oil prices.

According to Halliburton, the pandemic proved that operating remotely “isn’t as challenging as it looks.” In 2Q20, more than two-thirds of Schlumberger and Baker Hughes’s drilling activity was supported by remote operations, with many companies adopting remote drilling for the first time. Schlumberger aims to double the size of its digital business.
