The Wendy’s Company’s and Chipotle Mexican Grill are testing new experiences in virtual worlds to explore the potential of the metaverse, a virtual environment where people can use digital avatars to work, play and shop.

Wendy’s opened a virtual restaurant in Horizon Worlds, the virtual reality game from META. Visitors can’t buy food there, but can play a basketball-themed game located near the restaurant. Chipotle is introducing a game and virtual restaurant in ROBLOX games that mimics the company’s original Denver location. Players can earn “Burrito Bucks” good for real food at Chipotle restaurants in the real world.

We don’t know if restaurant-themed metaverse games will catch on, but we do know how to use digital twins/virtual simulation to improve restaurant performance. It’s what we do. For a national restaurant chain, we developed a fast food kitchen simulation model to analyze staffing levels, inventory count, menu mix impacts, financials, and customer turnaround metrics. For another national chain, we developed a simulation-based application to perform cook/process time sensitivity analysis based on feedback from vendors on capability. MOSIMTEC data scientists/industrial engineers can help future-proof your business and make the metaverse work for you.
