Simulation and modelling for sports

Sports are a sanctuary. They give us the thrill of victory and agony of defeat. They’re coming back to life, in fits and starts, but are they doing enough to protect players and the public?

The NHL/NBA, playing in bubbles, have reported no COVID cases, but MLB has had >100 cases and postponed >35 games so far with no fans in the stands but a typical travel schedule. The NFL has had >60 cases in training camp and plans to open the season soon. Teams will travel across the country and can allow fans in the stands. The KC Chiefs plan to seat 16,000 fans at games, 22% of capacity, while the NY Giants/Jets will not allow fans at home games. Some college football conferences cancelled fall schedules (Big 10, Pac-12) while others plan to play; multiple players have tested positive, with some opting out.

Some plans work; some don’t. With lots at stake, test your plans virtually before risking it all. Simulation and modelling can help. What strategies work and don’t work? What are key risk factors? What are key variables/variability? What data are available? What technology can be used? MOSIMTEC can help you map out the problem and explore paths to success. Don’t learn lessons the hard way. Leverage science to succeed. Then let the games begin!
